City of Gilbert Constitution Week Events
The City of Gilbert Constitution Week was a wonderful success. Steven W. Allen spoke about the making of the constitution on Sunday, September 14.
There was also a glass armonica player there. The glass armonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin and is a most magnificent instrument. One person said "I can close my eyes while listening to it and imagine that I am in heaven."
Saturday, September 20 was the Constitutional Fair. Ben Franklin, Uncle Sam, Betsy Ross and many others were there. Wonderful, music, dancers, and fireworks topped off a fabulous evening. Click on the link below to see pictures.

Trivia Question for October:
How many snips did it take Betsey Ross to make a five pointed star?
Trivia Question Answer:
Here is the rest of the story:
Betsy would often tell her children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends of the fateful day when three members of a secret committee from the Continental Congress came to call upon her. Those representatives, George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross, asked her to sew the first flag. This meeting occurred in her home some time late in May 1776. George Washington was then the head of the Continental Army. Robert Morris, an owner of vast amounts of land, was perhaps the wealthiest citizen in the Colonies. Colonel George Ross was a respected Philadelphian and also the uncle of her late husband, John Ross.
In June 1776, brave Betsy was a widow struggling to run her own upholstery business. Upholsterers in colonial America not only worked on furniture but did all manner of sewing work, which for some included making flags. According to Betsy, General Washington showed her a rough design of the flag that included a six-pointed star. Betsy, a standout with the scissors, demonstrated how to cut a five-pointed star in a single snip. Impressed, the committee entrusted Betsy with making our first flag. On July 4, 1776, John Dunlap of Philadelphia printed approximately 200 copies of the newly drafted and approved Declaration of Independence. Of these original 200 copies, 25 remain in existence and are referred to as "Dunlap broadsides". The only surviving "Dunlap broadside" touring the nation will be on display at The Arizona Capitol Museum in Phoenix, Arizona from October 4 - 12, 2003. This will be the Declaration's only stop in Arizona.
